Course Overview
This course will cover the etiology and risk factors for suicidal behavior, outline important assessment, intervention and prevention programs, and inform effective mental health treatment to help individuals develop and maintain a healthy perspective on life. The course will review research and literature concerning the scope of the problem, identification of high-risk groups, evidence-based prevention, and programs for delivering care and mental health treatment.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completing this course, the learner should be able to:
- Define terms related to suicide and suicidal behavior.
- Describe the prevalence of suicide and suicide attempts across the United States.
- Identify incidence and risk among different populations, including racial/ethnic groups, adolescents, older adults, veterans, and the gender diverse.
- Identify incidence and risk among those with psychiatric diagnoses.
- Identify key risk factors, protective factors, and warning signs in the etiology of suicide.
- Describe effective and efficient assessment of youth and adults who may be at risk for suicide.
- Recognize essential components of decision-making and documentation with respect to suicide assessment and intervention.
- Explain approaches to intervention and safety planning to manage individuals exhibiting suicidal ideation and other risk factors for suicide.
- Review effective prevention and intervention programs for at-risk youth and adults.
