Description:

It is easy in the day-to-day grind of clinical care to not only begin to forget some of the basic knowledge of stroke and its underlying physiology, but also to stay abreast of the latest developments in therapy assessment and care.  It is often difficult to know how to efficiently tap into this information and feel as if you have a full grasp of the state of best practice in stroke rehabilitation.  Participants will, by the end of this course, feel confident in their understanding of any gaps in their knowledge, comprehend the current state of evidence-based best practice in stroke rehabilitation, and have new tools for approaching evaluation of their patients with stroke.

Participants will gain an understanding of the listed gaps in knowledge, comprehend the current state of evidence-based best practice in stroke rehabilitation, and have new tools for approaching evaluation of their patients with stroke. 

Professional Objectives:

  1. Identify key structures of the central nervous system as they pertain to stroke.
  2. Identify the physiology of key brain structures and how they affect neurological function in the event of stroke.
  3. Identify Training for managers on creating a respectful culture and dealing with reported issues
  4. Recognize the different types of stroke and understand their impact on health care in the US.
  5. Identify the various methods for managing acute stroke medically and during the transition to rehab.
  6. Identify evidence-based methods for assessing the following areas post stroke:
    • History
    • Cognition including neglect
    • Cranial nerve function
    • Range of motion and tone
    • Muscle strength/control
    • Coordination
    • Sensation
    • Balance including contraversive pushing
    • Functional mobility including gait analysis
