Course Outline:
Hour 1
- Introduction to theory of Sensory Integration
- Introduce Jean Ayres and her foundational theories and development of sensory integration
- Glossary of common sensory integrative terms
- Discuss sensory integration for brain function
- Provide information regarding key elements to sensory integration theory such as adaptive response, neural plasticity, and organization of the cenral nervous system
- Discuss sensory integration development and how that affects child occupations at various stages
- Explain typical development for the prenatal period, neonatal period, first 6 months of life, second 6 months, second year, and agres 3-7.
Hour 2
- Introduce sensory integration problems
- Organize sensory integration problems in the following groups: sensory modulation, Poor Sensory Discrimination and Perception, Problems related to vestibular-proprioceptive functions and Praxis Problems
- Provide overview of Secondary Problems Related to Sensory Integrative Difficulties
- Provide methods for Assessment of Sensory Integrative Functions via questionnaire, screen and SIPT assessment
- Explain functions measured by the SIPT
- Go over Primary methods of sensory integrative intervention including Individual ASI intervention to improve underlying sensory integration abilities, Individual skill development training, Group skill development intervention Consultation, including modifications of activities, routines, and environments at home and school
- Discuss 2 case studies
