This course is intended for all healthcare professionals who care for pediatric patients with developmental delays resulting in decreased hand and fine motor proficiency. This course is also for healthcare professionals seeking knowledge regarding typical development for the hand from birth to school-aged children to better identify current developmental status and expected milestones for pediatric patients. Upon completing this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Analyze the components of hand skills and contributions of context factors and body functions to hand skills. 
  • Outline the relationship of hand skills to children’s occupations including play, activities of daily living, and school functions. 
  • Differentiate aspects of a thorough handwriting evaluation to include measuring handwriting performance in the areas of handwriting, legibility, writing speed, and ergonomic factors. 
  • Classify treatment and intervention utilizing various approaches such as neurodevelopmental, biomechanical, sensorimotor, acquisitional, and psychosocial.
