The goal of this basic, introductory course is to provide evidence-based practices that the occupational therapy practitioner in the state of Michigan can use when working with clients who have pain and to demonstrate the need for the occupational therapy practitioner’s role on pain management teams.

The goal of this basic, introductory course is to provide evidence-based practices that the occupational therapy practitioner in the state of Michigan can use when working with clients who have pain and to demonstrate the need for the occupational therapy practitioner’s role on pain management teams. 

Learning Outcomes:

After completing this course, the learner will be able to:

  • Define pain according to the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP);
  • Identify the economic and personal impact of pain, as well as potential prescription drug abuse;
  • Examine the physiology, classifications, and characteristics of acute and chronic pain;
  • Describe concepts and tools for pain assessment
  • Describe both pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to treating pain.
