Description:

How does one define leadership? Is it based on a ranked status, formal education and training, or seniority? Is it based on context, culture, desire, or opportunity? The tried-and-true question is often raised: What is leadership? A single definition of leadership is futile because it is dependent on the relationship between the “leader” and “follower”; thus, leadership can come in all shapes and sizes (McCleskey, 2014). Studies on leadership span the millennia; however, review of the current literature can expand our appreciation of leadership practices in an effort to become effective in this role. Everyone has seen leadership in practice in a variety of settings. Certain leadership styles lend themselves to being effective, inspiring, and enabling, whereas other styles can fall short. Exploring different leadership practices through a healthcare lens can help prepare practitioners for potential leadership and mentorship roles.

This basic-level course is designed to define leadership theories and models that frame current leadership practices. An exploration of various styles of leadership will enable learners to reflect on their own leadership practices and/or create a leadership plan for the application of new skills. The combination of leadership and mentorship education will enhance current healthcare practice to secure the future of the profession for the well-being of the clients served.
