This course is intended for all healthcare professionals interested in working as accessibility consultants assessing and planning home modifications. Those working with clients who are aging in place and/or are living with a disability will learn about tools available to enable their clients to safely and comfortably continue to live in their own homes.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completing this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Identify home modifications and their importance for improving safety and function.
  • Recognize basic guidelines for reporting and writing about people living with disabilities and list terms to avoid and suggested terminology.
  • Identify what certifications and designations are available for accessibility specialists.
  • List professionals that can comprise the team involved in the home assessment and modification process.
  • Identify how to access the client’s need for assistive devices, durable medical equipment, and smart technology.
  • Compare assessments that can be used by professionals with checklists that families can use.
  • Identify and problem solve issues specific to assessing a child as well as individuals with sensory issues and autism.
  • List products, resources, and design and safety solutions for all areas of the home.
