Description:

The shoulder complex is one of the leading areas of musculoskeletal pain.  Through poor posturing and overuse of the upper extremity, a variety of painful conditions can develop leading to local pain in the shoulder but contributing to cervical and lumbar spine pain as well.  Patients often are treated for months with passive modalities and exercise with minimal change in symptoms.

This course introduces manual evaluation techniques of the connective tissue surrounding the shoulder complex.  Once tissue specific impairments have been identified, manual therapy techniques can be selected that will directly affect the target tissue to quickly reduce the patient's symptoms while improving function.

This seminar-on-demand is 3 contact hours in length (check your state’s approval status in the state specific course catalog for your profession).

FL MT's: This course is approved for 3 hours in the relevant to and focus on massage therapy techniques (includes demonstration by the instructor) subject area.

Course Goals:

This course is intended to instruct the professional on manual evaluation techniques of the connective tissue surrounding the shoulder complex

Professional Objectives:

  1. Interpret joint mechanics and passive restraints
  2. Appreciate muscle actions and dysfunctions
  3. Understand innervation of the glenohumeral joint
  4. Identify common muscle tightnesses leading to thoracic kyphosis
  5. Interpre the application of goniometric measurements
  6. Interpret the application of Muscle selective tissue tensioning
  7. Interpret the role of muscle tightness on ROM
  8. Interpret the application of IASTM to improve soft tissue mobility
  9. Differentiate applications of MET for neurofascial relaxation vs positional correction
  10. Identify appropriate joint manipulations
  11. Identify treatment interventions to improve shoulder IR and flexion
  12. Identify treatment interventions to improve shoulder ER and extension

Criteria for Completion:

A score of 70% or more is considered passing.  Scores of less than 70% indicate a failure to understand the material and the test will need to be taken again until a passing score has been achieved.
