Description:

Cervical pain is a highly prevalent condition that drives patients to seek treatment. With reliance on modern technology, conditions of the spine are typically evaluated with imaging with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) being the preferred modality. MRIs often lead to one of two diagnostic classifications: discogenic pain or non-specific pain. Unfortunately, this omits a host of other structures that can be pain generators: ligaments, muscles, fascia, joint capsules, and others.

This course is designed for the rehabilitation clinician to move beyond static imaging to utilizing active and passive movements to identify patterns. After a pattern has been identified, the clinician will perform passive assessment techniques to confirm the suspected tissue impairment. Once the tissue impairment has been confirmed, specific interventions including patient education, manual therapy, and home exercises can be utilized to restore function while decreasing symptoms.

Goals & Objectives:

Course Goals:

Participants will gain a valid, reproducible assessment method to identify tissue-specific impairments.

Professional Objectives:

  1. Identify potential causes of neck pain
  2. Recognize relevant anatomical structures
  3. Identify signs/symptoms that would need referral
  4. Recognize potential cause of signs/symptoms
  5. Recognize active and passive movement screens
  6. Identify potential catastrophic spinal injury
  7. Recognize tissue involved with limited AROM vs PROM
  8. Recognize compensations for surrounding joints
  9. Recognize patterns during AROM
  10. Select additional tests to confirm impairment
  11. Select evidence-based interventions for specific patterns
  12. Select home exercises to re-enforce clinical interventions
