Description:

Healthcare providers who work with older adults encounter on a regular basis individuals with depression, cognitive changes and/or dementia.  These changes noted in older adults can impact many facets of their life and healthcare.  It is critical that healthcare providers have an understanding of these changes and can recognize symptoms and risk factors. 

This course will not only discuss the characteristics of depression, cognitive changes and dementia in older adults but it will also discuss assessment tools, treatment strategies, and medication management.

This course is intended to instruct the professional on having a thorough understanding of how depression, cognitive changes, and dementia impact older adults.  In addition to this understanding of the impact, these providers will have increased knowledge of how to screen and assess for these conditions, aid in treatment and maximize functional and quality of life outcomes.

Professional Objectives:

  1. Identify 3 clinical symptoms that are indicators of depression in older adults.
  2. Identify 2 risk factors for developing depression as an older adult.
  3. List 2 types of exercise that have positive benefits on those that have depression
  4. Recognize 2 types of memory loss
  5. List 2 characteristics of mild cognitive impairment (MCI)
  6. Identify 3 risk factors for delirium
  7. Recognize 3 differences between normal aging and dementia
  8. Identify 2 types of dementia
  9. Identify 2 assessment tools commonly used to assess cognition in older adults
  10. Recognize 2 interventions that are beneficial in those with dementia
