Depression and anxiety can impact an older adult’s daily life in a distressing way. Diminishing occupational performance and satisfaction is evident when the older adult becomes physically unwell, expresses hopelessness, and demonstrates social isolation by separation from family, friends, and day-to-day tasks. Depression is the most prevalent mental health disorder among older adults. Depression occurs in 18.4% of the older adult population compared to 4.7% in the general adult (18 years and older) population (National Center for Health Statistics, 2020; Villarroel & Terlizzi, 2020). Although the occurrence of a depressive episode may increase as a person ages, it is imperative for healthcare providers to acknowledge it occurs outside the normal aging process (Blazer, 2009; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and National Association of Chronic Disease Directors [CDC & NACDD], 2020a, 2020b; CDC, 2021; World Health Organization [WHO] a, 2017). Similar to depression, anxiety is one of the most common mental health disorders effecting Americans (CDC & NACDD, 2020a, 2020b; CDC, 2021; National Institute of Mental Health [NIMH], 2018b). Approximately one-half of older adults who have been diagnosed with major depression are also diagnosed with anxiety (Anxiety and Depression Association of America [ADAA], 2021).

Learning Outcomes

Upon the completion of this course, the learner will be able to: 

  • Recognize the types of anxiety and depressive disorders in older adults, identifying the effects on occupational performance. 
  • Design appropriate strategies for the treatment of depression and anxiety in older adults, encompassing effective screening tools for occupational therapy practitioners. 
  • Describe evidence-based treatments for depression in older adults, and the role of occupational therapy practitioners in these interventions. 
  • Utilize evidence-based occupational therapy approaches to facilitate treatment in older adults with depression and anxiety disorders.
