Course Overview
Healthcare professionals routinely encounter patients using dietary supplements. Oftentimes patients ingest supplements without the consent or assessment of a healthcare professional. This course is designed to provide an overview of dietary supplements, their efficacy and safety profiles, and regulatory landscape to empower healthcare professional assessment of dietary supplements encountered in practice.
This educational program is designed to provide an overview of the following:
• The regulation of nutritional supplements
• Categories of nutritional supplements and their safety and efficacy profiles
• Resources available to provide additional information.
Evidence-based practice is summarized, where appropriate, to support the safe and efficacious use of dietary supplements. Practice considerations are included to further aid in applying this information.
Learning Outcomes:
After completing this course, the learner will be able to:
- Identify the major categories of dietary supplements and describe their purported mechanisms of action and proposed therapeutic uses.
- Recognize the regulatory landscape surrounding dietary supplements, including key legislation and the roles of regulatory agencies.
- Appraise the current state of evidence for the efficacy and safety of dietary supplements.
- Recommend appropriate patient management of dietary supplements including considerations to product quality, protentional interactions with drugs or disease states, and coordination of care with other healthcare professionals.
