This course addresses the types and ranges of such deficits, to include swallowing disorders and the common post-stroke communication deficits. Content will include signs and symptoms of each type of disorder, potential treatment types determined by the speech language pathologist based on the specific prognostic factors and unique needs/abilities of the clients and tips for the client and their friends/family members. Upon the completion of this course, the learner will be able to: 

  • Differentiate possible signs and symptoms of dysphagia 
  • Compare therapeutic approaches for treatment of dysphagia 
  • Differentiate symptoms of aphasia, dysarthria, and apraxia to determine communication strategies for the interprofessional team member 
  • Contrast types of cognitive deficits and occupational limitations that might result from a stroke to specific parts of the brain 
  • Distinguish potential voice impairments that might result from a stroke
