Hour 1

  • Review definition of OT as it relates to a child's occupation.
  • Go over the key differences in a child's occupation and how they develop: learn, grow, play.
  • Discuss the three ways to be more creative that is backed by science

Hour 2

  • Review what Activity Analysis is and why it is so important
  • Review the following: Proprioception, Equilibrioception, Kinaesthesia, Thermoception,
  • Nociception, Chronoception
  • Discuss the key elements in how to be "bullet proof" in designing your activities without "props"
  • Explain the components of the vestibular system and why it is important to do the following: stair negotiations, hopping, skipping, galloping
  • Explain the reason why adapting is a superpower
  • Review the scientific study quoted in Grey's Anatomy and why Shonda Rhimes was on to something
  • Review supervision and safety when treating children and why it is so important and the different areas to look for

Hour 3

  • Learn how to apply the "formula" to anything and you will always have "bullet proof" treatment sessions
  • Discuss transitions to and from the classroom and ways to combat any issues and provide creative and fun easy strategies for this
  • Discuss the key components in a non-traditional, frowned upon activity that actually scientifically has been proven to increase attention and up to 29% more memory

  • Discuss and demonstrate the following:brain buttons, hook ups, cross crawl, the elephant, lazy 8’s, thinking cap, double doodles, energy yawn
  • Review and discuss the following steps in making your own "toolbox": Simple, BASIC, Analyze, Record

Description:

Creative Occupational Therapy Tools for Kids is a course to give you very practical “tools” to pull out and use daily with your students in almost any situation you may find yourself in when providing OT to school-aged students. In this course, I want to give you solid and grounded ideas that you can literally use anywhere. I want to show you practical things that you can store in your “toolbox” to pull out anytime, anywhere and without any “therapy” equipment. This course gives 2 full hours of real life activities to use in your "toolbox" everyday, in addition to 1.5 hours of technical knowledge, science based research and an in depth Activity Analysis worksheet to use with any activity.  The sky's the limit in this course.  It takes you from my ideas and treatment sessions to how to get your own creative juices flowing to incorporate fun with therapeutic with no extra cost and with no therapy equipment needed.

This course is intended to instruct the professional on the skills necessary to develop a "toolbox" to use anywhere without "therapy" equipment, along with obtaining a scientifically based way to improve their creativity. 

Professional Objectives:

  1. Identify definition of Occupational Therapy
  2. Identify what Occupational Therapy means, specifically, in the school setting.
  3. List the three things essential to learning as a child.
  4. Identify the acronym BASICS and what it means.
  5. Identify 3 science-based ways to improve your creativity.
  6. Identify what an Activity Analysis is.
  7. Identify 6 "other senses" not including: taste, touch, smell, sight and hearing
  8. Identify the vestibular system and at least 2 ways it is being hindered in today's children.
  9. List 3 cognitive levels according to Bloom's taxonomy.
  10. Identify the OT's/COTA's superpower.
  11. Identify at least 10 things important when it comes to the safety of your student.
  12. Recognize how to take common everyday toys, items, books, trash, etc. and make them into an OT treatment session.
  13. Identify techniques to transition to and from the classroom with your students.
  14. Identify the 4 key steps in making your "toolbox".
