Course Overview

This course is designed to provide healthcare team members with comprehensive information on the assessment, monitoring, and management of malnutrition in older adults. The course aims to equip participants with the skills to identify etiology-based nutrition diagnoses, understand the prevalence and impact of malnutrition, recognize signs and symptoms of nutritionally at-risk adults, and implement effective nutritional assessments and interventions. The course also covers the adverse effects of common medications on appetite, the importance of nutrition and hydration in improving patient outcomes, and current efforts by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to enhance patient safety and quality. This course is designed to provide healthcare team members with comprehensive information on the assessment, monitoring, and management of malnutrition in older adults. The course aims to equip participants with the skills to identify etiology-based nutrition diagnoses, understand the prevalence and impact of malnutrition, recognize signs and symptoms of nutritionally at-risk adults, and implement effective nutritional assessments and interventions. The course also covers the adverse effects of common medications on appetite, the importance of nutrition and hydration in improving patient outcomes, and current efforts by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to enhance patient safety and quality. Upon completing this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Investigate the three etiology-based nutrition diagnoses in adults in clinical practice settings. 
  • Determine the prevalence of malnutrition and its impact on clinical outcomes.  
  • Inspect signs and symptoms of nutritionally at-risk adults. 
  • Investigate the most common clinical diagnoses of people with the highest rates of malnutrition. 
  • Inspect adverse effects of common medications affecting appetite and resulting in decreased nutritional intake.
  • Demonstrate effective laboratory data and nutritional assessments for identification of malnutrition. 
  • Analyze the evidence supporting the positive impact nutrition and hydration has on improving functional and occupational outcomes. 
  • Analyze the current Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) efforts to improve patient safety and quality. 
  • Apply example protocols to be recommended for each member of the interprofessional healthcare team for management of malnutrition.
