  • History of hospice.
  • Essential characteristics of hospice and palliative care.
  • Team concepts, roles of social workers, nurses, physicians, home health aides, clergy, counselors, volunteers, OT/PT/ST.
  • Most common types of pain in cancer, Principles that Hospice apply for treatment of chronic pain.

Hour 2

  • Stage theory, Psychosocial Care of Dying Persons and their Families, Statement of Assumptions and Principles Concerning Psychosocial Care of Dying Persons and their Families.
  • Bereavement Follow Up Services, categories of bereavement, learn of bereavement services for teens and families, camps, counseling, Normal versus Pathological Grief, Prolonged or complicated grief disorder.

Hour 3 

  • The business of hospice, challenges hospice faces, curative treatment restriction, managed care and hospice.

Hour 4

  • Medicare hospice benefit, new Medicare certification requirements and payment, new requirements for Medicare-certified hospices, levels of care covered by hospice, and hospice in nursing facilities.
  • Research of effectiveness of hospice care, the future of hospice care and the right to die.

This course is intended to instruct the professional on current programs, available resources, strengths, challenges and future of hospice programs to better educate our patients and the community of available services and to increase the possibility for leadership opportunities due to improved awareness of technical aspects of hospice care.

Professional Objectives:

  1. Identify WHO definition of hospice 2. Identify essential components of a hospice program
  2. Identify team concepts and approaches in hospice care, identify roles of interdisciplinary team in hospice care
  3. Identify most common types of pain and treatment for cancer patients, identify common symptoms in hospice, identify symptoms of approaching death
  4. Identify stage theory, identify assumptions and principles for issues of the dying person, their families, their caregivers. Identify how to break bad news and importance of truth telling
  5. Identify bereavement follow up services that are available to family, spouse, children.

  7. Identify the challenges of the balance of hospice care by staying true to roots and needing to make money (the business of hospice), identify managed care in hospice, identify curative treatment restriction
