This intermediate level course is designed to assist physical therapists and physical therapy assistants in evaluating, planning, and preparing their older adult clients to age in place. This toolkit will highlight the role physical therapy plays in enhancing the quality of life for older adults and to allow them to participate in meaningful activities while remaining in their homes as they age and make the necessary modifications to do so.

Professional Objectives:

  1. Describe how psychosocial factors and medical conditions associated with the aging process influence aging in place.
  2. Differentiate between the roles of various home design professionals.
  3. Select appropriate home assessments and modifications for potential client needs.
  4. Utilize effective communication techniques when discussing home modifications with potential clients.
  5. Identify further educational opportunities and resources in aging in place.

Criteria for Completion: Depending on your state requirements you will be asked to complete either: An affirmation that you have completed the educational activity  or a mandatory test (a passing score of 70 percent is required). Test questions link content to learning objectives as a method to enhance individualized learning and material retention. Scores of less than 70% indicate a failure to understand the material and the test will need to be taken again until a passing score has been achieved.
