Course Overview

This course is intended for all healthcare providers working with clients who have suffered a spinal cord injury. They will learn practical strategies to help progress hand function using tenodesis for cervical-level spinal cord injury survivors to become more independent in daily activities. Learners will also understand the interdisciplinary nature and delineation of various healthcare providers’ roles in bowel and bladder management in the spinal cord injury population. This team-based approach will facilitate community reintegration, reduce risk for medical complications, and promote quality of life.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completing this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Define health care professionals’ unique role in bowel and bladder management for those who have a spinal cord injury.

  • Identify at least 2 pieces of adaptive equipment that facilitate independence in bowel and/or bladder management after SCI.

  • Recognize how implementing effective bowel/bladder management routines directly enhance occupational engagement in self-care, social participation, and community activities for individuals with SCI.

  • Identify 2 ways to upgrade and progress tenodesis in those with a complete spinal cord injury.

  • Recall when to utilize remediation versus compensation as it relates to hand function for those with an incomplete spinal cord injury.

  • Identify at least one splint that can be used to improve tenodesis function in those with a complete spinal cord injury.
