Description:

This course, Seating and Mobility for the Pediatric Population, reviews specific positioning considerations when working with children. The presenter discusses how to determine if a child is positioned adequately in their current seating as well as alternative positioning options. The importance of early mobility provision and strategies to determine if a child is ready for a power mobility device are reviewed. If the child is not yet ready, specific strategies to develop those skills are presented. If a child is ready, the power mobility assessment process is addressed. A wide variety of alternative power wheelchair driving methods are covered along with clinical indicators. Finally, mobility training to optimize driving skills after equipment delivery is reviewed.

Professional Objectives:

  1. Identify the importance of positioning in the pediatric population.
  2. Recognize at least 2 pediatric-specific seating considerations.
  3. Identify if a child is positioned adequately in their current seating system.
  4. Recognize at least 3 alternative pediatric positioning systems.
  5. Locate research that supports the importance of early mobility.
  6. Identify strategies to determine if a child is ready for power mobility.
  7. Identify strategies to develop readiness to use a power mobility device.
  8. Identify assessment strategies used during a pediatric power mobility evaluation.
  9. Identify 3 proportional and 3 non-proportional power wheelchair driving.
