Rehab Considerations with Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS) and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD)

Delivery Type
$96

Description:

The current common misconception that Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (hEDS) and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD) are primarily joint hypermobility disorders has led to inefficient treatment in the rehab setting. Misunderstanding of the complexity of the multisystem disorders can lead to poor progression in the clinic, frustration for both the practitioner and patient, and even at times, worsening of symptoms.

This course will explore the multiple systems affected in those with hEDS and HSD, how to identify those patients that may present with the diagnoses, and concepts on rehab strategies to ensure long term beneficial results. May of the common misconceptions on forced restrictions without evaluation that can feed into the fear-avoidance model will be explained and dispelled.

The learner will be able to evaluate the patient as whole, understanding various systemic manifestations of the disorder and how it may affect treatment, be able to have a knowledgeable conversation with the patient about what is happening or what to be aware of in the future, and be able to recognize more severe symptoms that may require a referral out to a specialist.

Goals & Objectives:

Course Goals:

The participant will gain the knowledge to evaluate the patient as whole, understanding various systemic manifestations of the disorder and how it may affect treatment, be able to have a knowledgeable conversation with the patient about what is happening or what to be aware of in the future, and be able to recognize more severe symptoms that may require a referral out to a specialist.

Professional Objectives:

  1. Identify the many roles connective tissue has within the human body and what can be involved with a connective tissue disorder.
  2. Identify the genetic presentation of EDS and factors that can influence genetic expression.
  3. Recognize the reasoning for replacement of the nosology into new classifications.
  4. Identify the clinical presentation of the different forms of Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder.
  5. Recall the genetic mutations of the more common forms of EDS.
  6. Identify the clinical diagnostic criteria in someone with hEDS.
  7. Identify the systemic manifestations that can occur in those with hEDS and HSD.
  8. Identify treatment strategies and modifications needed that are beneficial to those with hEDS and HSD, and strategies that promote long term care.
