Course Overview

Pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders often occur in the context of medically, behaviorally, and motorically complex infants and children. This course will provide clinicians with the knowledge and skills they need to perform a thorough diagnostic evaluation as well as tools and techniques to treat not only the feeding and swallowing issues in their clients but the underlying contributing factors as well. Participants will leave this course armed with competencies in assessment of pediatric dysphagia and development of effective treatment plans that are based on the most up-do-date evidence.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completing this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Explain the difference between typical and atypical development in areas of respiration, gastrointestinal function, and oro-pharyngeal swallow functions 
  • Summarize at least 3 components of clinical feeding and swallow assessment 
  • Discuss strengths and weaknesses of fluoroscopic and endoscopic instrumental assessment 
  • Describe three evidence-based interventions to improve respiration and airway protection in children with aspiration 
  • Describe three evidence-based interventions to increase volume and variety of food intake in children
