Recently the opioid epidemic was declared a public health emergency. This has set off a ripple effect throughout all of healthcare as all disciplines are being challenged to adopt a better approach to pain management. One implication of these developments is an emphasis on a more holistic, multi-disciplinary approach and a new emphasis on non-pharmacological means of managing pain. The goal of this course is to provide an overview of evidence-based non-pharmacological means of managing pain. 

Professional Objectives:

  1. List cognitive, emotional, and psychosocial factors that affect pain
  2. Identify the main elements of patient neuroscience education about pain
  3. Identify elements of best practice for pain management for healthcare professionals/nursing
  4. Identify physical therapy approaches to pain management
  5. Identify the contributions of OTs in pain management
