Pain is a complex phenomenon and is experienced differently by every person. The experience of pain and the way people react to it varies with culture, age, and co-existing medical or mental health conditions. It is imperative that physical therapy professionals have knowledge of the various types of pain, their physiologies, how to assess pain, and how to facilitate pain management. This basic-level course provides an overview of pain, the physiology of pain, its impact on economic and personal status, and pain assessment and treatment.

Professional Objectives:

  1. Define pain according to the International Association for the Study of Pain.
  2. Identify the economic and personal impact of pain, as well as potential prescription drug abuse.
  3. Examine the physiology, classifications, and characteristics of acute and chronic pain.
  4. Describe concepts and tools for pain assessment.
  5. Describe both pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to treating pain.

Criteria for Completion: Depending on your state requirements you will be asked to complete either: An affirmation that you have completed the educational activity  or a mandatory test (a passing score of 70 percent is required). Test questions link content to learning objectives as a method to enhance individualized learning and material retention. Scores of less than 70% indicate a failure to understand the material and the test will need to be taken again until a passing score has been achieved.
