Description:

This course is intended for occupational therapy practitioners with interest in expanding school-based practice to include positive mental health program involvement. Occupational Therapy’s Role in School-Based Positive Mental Health Initiatives will explore positive mental health as a preventative approach to the various mental health concerns and crises that are plaguing schools in a post-COVID world. Positive mental health theory and principle will be explored to establish foundational knowledge. Trends in existing school culture, guidelines, and services that impact occupational therapy’s role in positive mental health involvement will be examined to establish the need for OT involvement. Identification of advocacy and promotion opportunities to emphasize occupational therapy’s distinct contribution to positive mental health initiatives will be evaluated. Appraisal of existing programs and development of potential positive mental health programs will be applied through case study exploration. Practical strategies will be offered to improve confidence, skills, and resources for those OTPs who wish to become an integral part of school positive mental health programming.

Course Goals:

Current practice trends in school-based occupational therapy does not reflect ESSA and AOTA’s call and support for school-based practitioners to become part of positive mental health programming. This reality lends  multi-faceted rationale: 1. Occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) are not aware of the national supports that are in place for the profession, 2. OTPs are not comfortable with advocacy and promotion of services that are outside of their typical practice, 3. OTPs are not comfortable implementing positive mental health programming due to lack of practice experience, 4. School administrators are not knowledgeable regarding occupational therapy’s educational background in human services and psychology and the guiding Framework that outlines the psychosocial features of human occupation, and 5. OTPs are often not included in programming initiatives that influence school culture (AOTA, 2020). 

Learning Outcomes:

Upon the completion of this course, the learner will be able to: 

  • Recall defining characteristics and theoretical aspects of positive mental health​ (PMH) 
  • Analyze current trends in school culture that warrant PMH programming​ 
  • Identify occupational therapy’s role in school PMH initiatives as defined by professional and federal entities​ 
  • Examine school PMH advocacy and promotion opportunities for key decision makers in administration​ 
  • Prioritize an interdisciplinary team approach to school PMH initiatives for best practices in fidelity and sustainability​ 
  • Formulate possible school PMH initiatives for age groups using a case study approach​
