This advanced-level course is designed for healthcare providers with a desire to learn more about the development of the fetus, changes that occur during or shortly after birth, and how to assess and treat the newborn. 

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completing this course, the learner will be able to:

  • Explain the five stages of lung development and fetal circulation. 
  • ​Explain the purpose of fetal lung fluid and fetal breathing. 
  • ​Explain the role of surfactant in lung mechanics and how to test for lung maturity.    
  • ​Recognize the fetal circulatory pathway and the basic anatomical differences between the adult and the neonate pulmonary and circulatory systems. 
  • ​Recognize different assessments of fetal growth and development.    
  • ​Identify the processes during labor and delivery and for the newborn to transition to extrauterine life. 
  • ​Explain the basic equipment needs and assessments for the delivery of the high-risk infant.​
