Course Overview

The purpose of this course is to review the causes of foot drop and offer solutions to address foot drop when an AFO is not available or how to modify one to improve gait function. The emphasis will address pre-swing and swing phase interventions of gait when foot drop is a significant issue. This course provides interventions to address foot drop in individuals with neurologic impairment that will facilitate critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and clinical decision-making strategies for clinicians.   

Learning Outcomes

Upon completing this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Recognize gait impairments in stance or swing phase suggestive of foot drop.
  • Determine the cause of foot drop based on impairments or activity limitations as presented in a written case, picture, or video.
  • Create interventions within the scope of practice to address foot drop based on a written case, picture, or video.
  • Justify the intervention to address foot drop based on a written case, picture, or video.
  • Integrate information learned that can address social determinants of health and be immediately applied to neurologic rehabilitation practice.
