Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) to the Upper Quarter

Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) to the Upper Quarter

2 Hours Instructional Level: Intermediate

Delivery Type
$33

Description:

This course provides the clinician with an understanding of the treatment concepts, as well as specific techniques, in order to effectively incorporate Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilizations (IASTM) to common musculoskeletal disorders of the upper quarter. This course reviews the fascial system, including local and regional fascial tracks, as well as the pathophysiology of fascial dysfunction. The evidence supporting the biological effects of IASTM on soft tissue healing, as well as clinical outcome studies are summarized. The treatment principles and parameters of IASTM are presented, including soft tissue assessment and treatment strategies, indications, relative precautions and absolute contraindications, the role of complimentary treatment approaches, and the importance of immediate re-assessment. Other principles of IASTM, including recommended treatment time, appropriate degree of applied force, and proper sequencing of physical therapy interventions are discussed, based on scientific principles and expert opinion. Different tool options are addressed and the advantages and disadvantages of each are summarized. This course lecture is supplemented with over 40 video-based techniques. The videos emphasize correct patient positioning and execution of IASTM.

Goals & Objectives:

Course Goals:

This course will present the best available evidence for the clinical use of IASTM in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders involving the upper quarter.     Lecture material will be supplemented with extensive video presentations of treatment techniques for various spine tissue dysfunctions. The videos will capture and emphasize correct patient positioning and execution of IASTM techniques. Treatment principles of IASTM, including recommended treatment time, degree of applied force and proper sequencing of physical therapy interventions will be discussed, based on scientific principles and expert opinion. Contraindications, precautions and normal/abnormal tissue response to IASTM will be presented.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completing this course, the learner will be able to:

  • Recognize the factors that can affect the biomechanical properties of fascia.
  • Identify the benefits of using IASTM for the clinician.
  • Recognize the general indications for using IASTM.
  • Identify the contraindications of using IASTM.
  • Locate the normal vs abnormal tissue reactivity in response to IASTM.
  • Select one indication for applying IASTM to the Suboccipital region.
  • Select one indication for applying IASTM to the Upper trapezius muscle.
  • Select one indication for applying IASTM to the Infraspinatus muscle.
  • Select one indication for applying IASTM to the Teres Major muscle.
  • Select one indication for applying IASTM to the front fascial arm line.
