Dementia is a degenerative disease that results in a loss of brain function, including significant limitations in memory, thinking, language, judgment, and behavior. Light to moderate exercise may benefit dementia patients by improving both symptoms and quality of life. The purpose of this course is to evaluate the evidence found in the literature on the advantages and applications of home-based exercise programs for patients with dementia. Several exercise modalities will be discussed as well as the effects of those programs on patients endurance, balance, ADLs, cognitive function, and mood.

Course Goals:

To review the current evidence based literature to determine if the introduction of home-based exercise programs improves cognitive function and stabilizes mood swings in patients with dementia.

Professional Objectives:

Identify Homeostasis and the role of the nervous system.
Recognize the branches of the human nervous system.
Name the three divisions of the human brain.
Recognize the primary causes of dementia
Identify the effects and manifestations of progressing dementia.
Recognize the impact of home based exercise programs on cognitive function and the effect on mood swings in patients with dementia.
Identify the merits of employing video games in encouraging exercise among dementia patients.

Criteria for Completion:

A score of 70% or more is considered passing. Scores of less than 70% indicate a failure to understand the material and the test will need to be taken again until a passing score has been achieved.
