This basic-level course is written for healthcare professionals, including social workers, mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists, respiratory therapists, and occupational and physical therapy practitioners. Other healthcare professionals who work with older adults and on interdisciplinary teams will also find the information presented useful to their practice.

Professional Objectives:

  1. Identify frameworks and principles commonly used in healthcare settings for resolving ethical problems.
  2. Recognize the steps used in resolving ethical dilemmas.
  3. Distinguish between capacity and competence.
  4. Describe the concept of advance care planning.
  5. Identify the hierarchy used in surrogate decision making.
  6. Recognize ethical concerns that commonly arise related to the use of medical technologies.

Test questions link content to learning objectives as a method to enhance individualized learning and material retention. Scores of less than 70% indicate a failure to understand the material and the test will need to be taken again until a passing score has been achieved.
