Description:

Patients we see for dysphagia evaluations and therapy often have numerous comorbidities that impact their swallow. As the number of diagnoses increase, so do the medications. It is our job to understand how these disorders, diseases and medications change the swallow. The COVID-19 pandemic creates problems with swallowing, specifically post-extubation. We need to recognize the red flags with COVID-19 patients in our evaluations. Medications pose a risk for the individual who is living at home. Many older adults self medicate and don’t comprehend the potential side effects of drugs, food and supplements. Mixing specific foods and medications could create a potential medical emergency. When we are working with individuals as outpatients or through home health, it is important to discuss any meds or supplements they are using and provide education to avoid potentially harmful side effects.
