Description:

There is emerging evidence linking common orthopedic dysfunction and injury to the core. Common medical model diagnoses such as patella femoral pain, hip replacement, and rotator cuff injury as well as fall risk in our older populations all have impairments that can have core implications. In this presentation clinicians who work with patients suffering from various ailments and dysfunctions are taught the fundamentals of motor control.

This course describes how these fundamentals of rehabilitation (mobility, stability, controlled mobility and skill proximal stability for distal mobility) are the foundation of core training and how a refresher on these fundamentals can greatly impact a patient’s rehabilitation process.

Goals & Objectives:

Course Goals:

Participants will gain a better understanding of the literature and they will begin to really think hard about what they are telling their patients about the core. Clinicians will incorporate more extremity and weight bearing exercises into their core exercises.

Professional Objectives:

  1. Identify the historical perspective of the core stability training in rehabilitation.
  2. Identify the core muscles and the anatomical basis for functional core stability.
  3. Select assessment techniques of core stability.
  4. Identify the specificity of ther-ex prescription on the best core exercises given a patient’s condition.
  5. Recognize the utilization core exercises in Upper Extremity injuries.
  6. Identify the effects of core stability on lower extremities injuries.
  7. Identify the fundamental principles of adult core training program and fall prevention.
  8. Recognize the utilization of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF), breathing and chair exercises from core training.
