Course Overview
Ankle injuries are considered the most common sports injury. Some deleterious effects related to these common injuries include high recurrence rates, chronic instability, increased risk of osteoarthritis, and decreased future physical activity level. Lecture techniques will be implemented to achieve the stated objectives. The instructor will provide an overarching review of the literature as it pertains to ankle sprain and foot injury prevention, evaluation, and rehabilitation. Sports medicine professionals will be able to develop a multidimensional evidence-based plan for acute ankle sprain injuries, including the components of evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, return to play decision making, and prevention to reduce long-term negative effects from this common sports-related injury.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completing this course, the learner should be able to:
- Identify the incidence and prevalence of ankle sprains in competitive athletes leading to the significant need for proper management.
- Distinguish between various types of common ankle sprains in an athletic population.
- Choose appropriate exercises to implement throughout the rehabilitation process to manage these injuries.
- Apply a return to play plan for competitive athletes to allow for safe and effective participation.
- Interpret various functional test and measures used to assess readiness for return to play and reduction in recurrence.
