Description:

The information in this presentation would open clinicians to opportunity to assess and treat posture of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Individuals with ASD have a diminished perception of their body movement and postural orientation; as a result, they often sit, stand, and walk with postural impairment. Studies of the postural profile of children with ASD report a deviation from the typical age-matched population in regard to leg length discrepancy, kyphosis, lumbar scoliosis, and genu valgum.  This presentation provides a review of how to observe and record standing posture in children and adults with ASD. In this presentation therapist will learn visual observation and reporting that is based on a UK method of Posture and Posture Ability scale.  The presentation will also present yoga-based exercises that clinicians can easily implement in therapy. It will focus on prevention and improvement of abnormal posture impairments so to allow for better functional activities.

Goals & Objectives:

Course Goals:

This course is intended to share evidence based and clinical knowledge on assessment of postural challenges of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Intellectual Disabilities (ID).  It includes suggested therapy using Posture Care and Yoga-based interventions with the goal of improving function.

Professional Objectives:

  1. Recognize how lack of information on base body shape or postural issues in studies of Posture Control of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can change the conclusion of these studies.
  2. Recognize the important of getting information on posture and how it feels from individuals with ASD directly: "good posture" = extremely uncomfortable + sensory overload”.
  3. Identify reasons that individuals with ASD give for staying in poor posture such as kind of mindblindness Poor proprioception
  4. Recognize Kendall’s consequence of postural abnormality of progressive weakness and reduced function.
  5. Recognize Kendall’s definition of Standing Posture as a composite of the positions of all the joints of the body at any given moment, muscle balance and anatomical standing position.
  6. Recognize that UK scale of Posture and Posture Ability can be used to help therapists assess posture of a person with ASD.
  7. Identify the proper answer on different items in Posture and Posture Ability scale when assessing posture of an individual with ASD.
  8. Recognize the use of a visual art term of Contrapposto can be easily used when assessing standing posture of individual with ASD.
