Description:

Hamstring injuries are common during sporting activities with high re-injury rates, which may indicate inadequate rehabilitation or premature return to play. Lecture will be implemented to achieve the stated objectives. The instructor will provide an overarching review of the literature as it pertains to mechanisms and prognostic factors of hamstring muscle and tendon injuries. Participants will be able to reflect on their current rehabilitation and return to play plan for hamstring injuries and make appropriate modifications for future rehabilitation interactions.

Goals & Objectives:

Course Goals:

Through proper management and rehabilitation of acute hamstring strains, a reduction in re-injury rates may be achieved to decrease medical costs and participation time loss. It is essential for healthcare professionals to have a thorough understanding of proper rehabilitation techniques regarding hamstring strains to address some of the established concerns. Athletic trainers should have an increased awareness regarding exercise design with greater emphasis on eccentric strengthening during hamstring rehabilitation. Various factors should be considered when attempting to make a return to play prognosis following acute hamstring injuries. Although eccentric exercises may be beneficial, immediate rest and immobilization may benefit the athlete for the first few days after injury. Adequate rehab techniques should address muscle strength, flexibility, neuromuscular control, and lumbo-pelvic stability.

Professional Objectives:

  1. Identify common mechanisms of injury that lead to hamstring muscle and tendon injuries.
  2. Recognize prognostic factors that influence duration of recovery.
  3. Recognize the importance of eccentric exercises in hamstring rehabilitation.
  4. List guidelines to effectively manage a return to play decision in athletic hamstring injuries.
