The purpose of this intermediate level course is to provide occupational therapy practitioners with in-depth knowledge about working with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in traditional and role emerging practice settings. 

Professional Objectives:

  1. Define intellectual and developmental disability (IDD), identify the specific conditions associated with IDD, and describe their typical presentation.  
  2. Analyze the historical, social, and cultural influences on the treatment of individuals with IDD  
  3. Compare and contrast theoretical frameworks of disability and contexts of care typical for individuals with IDD  
  4. Illustrate the importance of the interdisciplinary treatment team and roles of individual members in the treatment of adults with IDD   
  5. Apply occupational therapy models of practice and theories to assessment and intervention for adults with IDD
