Course release date: 6/1/2026

Course Overview

This course explores how compassion, emotional safety, and relationship-building form the foundation of effective pediatric therapy. Grounded in developmental theory, attachment research, and trauma-informed practice, the course examines how children’s nervous systems, learning capacity, and engagement are directly influenced by the quality of their interactions with caregivers, teachers, and therapists. Participants will learn how consistent, attuned, and sensory-aware therapeutic approaches help children feel safer, more connected, and more willing to participate—especially those with trauma histories, insecure attachment, or sensory challenges. Through evidence-based strategies, case examples, and practical tools, this course empowers pediatric clinicians to integrate compassion into everyday interventions, strengthening therapeutic rapport and enhancing outcomes across diverse settings. By the end of the course, attendees will understand how small relational moments can drive meaningful clinical change.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completing this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Recognize how the relational experiences of children (with parents, teachers, therapists) influence their sense of safety, trust, and participation in therapy.
  • Identify the four primary attachment styles (secure, avoidant, anxious/ambivalent, disorganized) and relate how each style might influence a child’s behavior in a therapy setting.
  • Recall at least three compassion-based strategies that support the therapeutic relationship and foster engagement, regulation, and trust in pediatric interventions.
  • Recognize a case scenario to determine how the therapeutic environment and adult-child interactions can serve as corrective relational experiences for children with early attachment disruption.
  • Identify a plan to incorporate a child’s preferences and sensory needs into a therapeutic session in order to strengthen connection and coregulation.
