Description:

Orthopedic issues are a common problem in the geriatric population and orthopedic diagnoses are frequently seen in home care patients. Outcome Assessment and Information Set (OASIS) scoring and episode management related to Patient Driven Groupings Model (PDGM) are unique to the home care environment and relevant to the goals we set and how we treat  patients with orthopedic issues. This course looks at common orthopedic problems encountered in the home care setting. OASIS scoring, treatment planning, and episode management for these clients will be covered so participants can effectively and confidently improve clinical, functional, and OASIS outcomes with geriatric orthopedic clients.

Participants will increase their competence and confidence in treating geriatric orthopedic patients, leading to improved client and OASIS outcomes.

Professional Objectives:

  1. Identify the role of OASIS and PDGM in episode management for home care geriatric orthopedic patients
  2. Recognize how falls risk influences OASIS scoring and episode management in home care geriatric orthopedic patients
  3. Identify how hip precautions post THA can affect OASIS scoring
  4. Identify how hip abductor strength is typically affected after THA and the best ways to address weakness in this muscle group.
  5. Select typical gait deficits with THA patients
  6. Identify the difference between a femoral neck hip fracture and intertrochanteric hip fracture and how muscle involvement may differ between them
  7. Identify how quadriceps strength is affected by TKA
  8. Identify effective ways to increase quadriceps strength after TKA
  9. Identify how a lack of restoration of knee extension after TKA can affect the contralateral lower extremity
  10. Identify where vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) most often occur and how VCFs affect spinal alignment

  12. Identify how age-related changes in the spine lead to stenosis
