Course Overview

This course provides a comprehensive, evidence-informed exploration of the iliopsoas muscle and its role in lower back and hip dysfunction. Participants will examine the neurobiological foundations and real-world biomechanical influences that contribute to iliopsoas hypertonicity, impaired movement patterns, and pain referral.

Low back pain is one of the most frequently reported musculoskeletal complaints in a clinical setting. The iliopsoas, often implicated due to its anatomical relationships with the lumbar spine, pelvis, and femur, may become shortened or facilitated secondary to trauma, prolonged seated postures, repetitive movement patterns, or sympathetic-nervous-system activation. Altered tissue tone in the iliopsoas can contribute to disruption of normal lumbopelvic rhythm and compensatory dysfunction in thoracic and cervical segments.

Through lecture, palpation instruction participants will learn assessment strategies and manual techniques to address the iliopsoas and secondary hip flexors. Interventions emphasized include gentle release approaches, neuromuscular reeducation principles, and flexibility strategies grounded in neurobiology and functional biomechanics.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completing this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Identify the anatomical and neurobiological structures of the iliopsoas complex and its relationship to lumbar and pelvic function.
  • Assess the iliopsoas and its influence on pelvic alignment using observational measures and therapist-guided screening techniques.
  • Apply manual therapy and neuro-biomechanically informed release strategies to address hypertonicity in the iliopsoas and synergistic structures (as practiced through demonstration and self-directed skill integration).
  • Identify stretches to maintain your client’s low back and pelvic health.
