North Carolina PTs & PTAs: Understanding Your Home Study Limits

North Carolina PTs are required to complete 30 points of continuing education and PTAs are required to complete 20 points before December 31st every 2 years depending on the issuance date. The requirements are a little complicated, so we've broken it down here to be as simple as learning the ABCs!

North Carolina Home Study Limit

According to the requirements listed in this chart from the State Board of Physical Therapy Examiners, North Carolina PTs and PTAs are allowed to complete up to 10 hours of the 36-hour continuing education requirement via our online courses, which provide an assessment element, at a rate of 1 point per contact hour. Those online courses which do not provide an assessment element or exam may be completed, but only up to 5 hours, at a rate of 3 hours to 1 point. Also, if you order a text-based course via the mail version, which includes the printed materials and exam, you will receive credit on 3 hours to 1 point ratio, with a maximum of 5 hours in this category. In order to complete up to 10 hours, you must order the online version, which includes an online graded assessment.

HomeCEU courses include a graded exam, so North Carolina PTs and PTAs may complete up to 10 points of their continuing education through one of our online courses at a rate of 1 hour to 1 point!

Participation in a live course or conference is accepted at a rate of 1 hour = 1 point. Physical Therapists may complete up to 29 points via this method, while Physical Therapist Assistants may complete a maximum of 19 points via this method.

Required Continuing Education Courses

During each 2 year reporting period, every licensee must complete a jurisprudence exercise provided by the Board. The jurisprudence exercise is available online at the Board's website, and a certificate of completion is issued to a licensee at the conclusion of the exercise.

Continuing Education Points VS. Hours

HomeCEU online courses are valued at 1 hour = 1 point as long as they are delivered online. Several other categories are given in this chart of courses that are worth as little as 3 hours to 1 point. (Home study courses which are self-designed, and do not contain an assessment method fall into this category.)

Accepted Courses

HomeCEU courses are accepted by the North Carolina Board of Physical Therapy Examiners at a rate of 1 to 1 when delivered online, with a maximum of 10 contact hours per renewal period.
