Let the countdown begin! All Minnesota physical therapists (PTs) and physical therapist assistants (PTAs) will need to have 20 contact hours of physical therapy continuing education completed by the deadline, in order to meet the continuing education requirement set by the Minnesota State Board of Physical Therapy. This means ringing in the New Year with your continuing education with a clean slate! But before you can pull your train into the celebration station, you'll need to understand the differences of Category 1 and Category 2 continuing education courses, and know how they relate to your physical therapy continuing education requirement.
Here's a breakdown of the rules you should be familiar with:
- Category 1 continuing education courses have been reviewed and approved by the Minnesota State Board of Physical Therapy. To satisfy your PT CEU requirement, you must take at least 10 contact hours from Category 1. You may take all of your contact hours from Category 1.
- Category 2 continuing education courses satisfy the requirements established by the Minnesota State Board of Physical Therapy. Category 2 courses do not require pre-approval by the board. You may take a maximum of 10 hours of physical therapy continuing education from Category 2.
Basically, you have two options: you are able to split your 20 contact hour requirement between the two categories or take Category 1 CE courses only. Either way, your online physical therapy continuing education should be accepted. So put on your party hat and pass out the favors, because you're one step closer to completing your continuing education requirement. (Please visit the Minnesota State Board of Physical Therapys website for further details regarding the acceptance of Category 1 & Category 2 courses: http://www.physicaltherapy.state.mn.us/ )
