Hour 1

  • Statistics of CVA
  • Definition of CVA 
  • Ischemic strokes and sources of cardiac and arterial causes
  • Dysfunction caused based on location of occulation in the brain

Hour 2

  • Medical management for deep vein thrombosis, respiratory problems, cardiac disease and bladder and bowel dysfunction 
  • Cover various standardized assessments that can be used for evaluation
  • Intervention principles to consider during rehabilitation

Hour 3 

  • Functional limitations post-stroke and various treatment options
  • Post stroke limitations include 
  • Inability to perform chosen occupations while seated
  • Inability to engage in chosen occupations in standing
  • Inability to communicate secondary to language dysfunction

Hour 4

  • Inability to perform chosen occupations secondary to neurobehavioral/cognitive-perceptual impairments
  • Inability to perform chosen tasks secondary to upper extremity dysfunction
  • Inability to perform chosen tasks secondary to visual impairment

Stroke is one of the most commonly seen diagnoses in hospitals, subacute, acute, outpatient centers and home health. No matter what sector of rehabilitation you currently work in, this course will help you develop a well-rounded understanding of CVA including background information, causes, effects of stroke based on location of occlusion, risk factors, medical management following stroke, procedures for evaluation and treatment, and research. The majority of the course covers functional limitations observed after a stroke. We will discuss how we can not only attempt to increase function for the patient, but also educate caregivers for optimal carry over. All in all, this course will help you be a better patient advocate, which is one of the best things we can do for our patients!
