This course is intended for professionals and parents supporting the communication of preschool and school-age autistic students. The goal of this course is to help professionals and parents learn about communication strategies for younger autistic students and develop a framework for working on communication skills. Foundational skills, goal setting and specific strategies for intervention will be discussed. Lecture and videos will be used to illustrate these concepts.

  • List 8 foundational skills to address with preschool-aged & school-aged autistic learners.   
  • List 8 functional and specific goals for preschool-aged and school-aged autistic students.  
  • Define joint attention and its importance in occupational activities. 
  • State why it is important to start work on labeling preferred items.   
  • Recognize 3 modified leisure activities that can help improve participation in school and home activities for autistic learners.
