Connective Tissue Disorders of the Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS)- Saturday, January 18th, 2025, 10:00 am- 3:00 pm ET

$144

Description:

For many years, the group of genetic connective tissue disorders of the Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS) has been considered a “rare” group of disorders. While some of the specific classifications may be rare in presentation, we now understand the group of diagnoses as a whole is not as rare as we once thought. EDS is often misdiagnosed and poorly understood in the medical field. With this poor understanding, the patient is unable to get the wholistic care required for the many systems involved to ensure a better prognosis. Being able to recognize, understand the complexity, and have a conversation with the patient on treatment strategies can help improve quality of life significantly for these individuals.

In this course, you will be provided with the general presentation of the connection tissue disorder along with the genetic background before diving into each specific form of the disorder. You will also learn the prevalence, presentation, clinical diagnostic criteria that leads to testing, and recommended treatment strategies specific to each type of EDS. You will be able to recognize, appropriately refer out, and offer a grounded relationship with your patient to build a confident treatment plan.

Goals & Objectives:

Course Goals:

Participants will gain post-schooling education on these specific disorders to efficiently recognize, support, and manage the health of these patients.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify the many roles connective tissue has within the human body and what can be involved with a connective tissue disorder.
  • Identify the genetic presentation of EDS and factors that can influence genetic expression.
  • Recognize the history and evolution of presentation and classifications of EDS.
  • Identify the reasoning for replacement of the nosology into new classifications.
  • Select the systems that can be involved in someone with a diagnosis of EDS.
  • Recognize the complexity of the presentation of the disorder as whole.
  • Identify the general presentation of the most common forms of EDS in the clinic (hEDS, cEDS, vEDS).
  • Recognize the clinical diagnostic criteria and differential diagnoses for each subgroup of EDS.
  • Select the management strategies specific for the different categories of EDS if specialized and follow up care is necessary.
  • Identify the difference in diagnostic criteria between the two disorders of hEDS and HSD.
  • Identify the care team that may be needed and involved in an individual patient's care.
