This course addresses the most recent changes in diagnostic criteria of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and the evaluation tools that rehab professionals and other professionals may use to assess needs in areas of executive function, sensory, motor, behavioral, visual, social-emotional and communication skills and performance of daily living activities. Identify the three deficit areas and types of behaviors required to meet the proposed diagnostic criteria for ASD in the Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM) V edition
List 5-8 assessment tools designed to identify impairments in sensory processing, motor, play, communication or visual skills.
Define the terms “sensory reinforcement” and “sensory diet strategies” to demonstrate how they differ.
List 3-5 characteristics of autism that impact the development of fine-motor skills.
List five activities that may help the over-responsive child achieve an optimal neurological state for learning
List five activities that may help the under-responsive child achieve an optimal neurological state for learning.
