Description:

This course addresses the most recent changes in diagnostic criteria of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and the evaluation tools that rehab professionals and other professionals may use to assess needs in areas of executive function, sensory, motor, behavioral, visual, social-emotional and communication skills and performance of daily living activities. 

Both evidence based interventions and alternative treatment options such as animal assisted therapies and iPad technologies will be discussed with a focus on activity adaptations and teaching strategies that promote engagement, motor skills, sensory processing and functional skills so that children of all ages succeed to the best of their abilities.

This course is intended to instruct the professional treating clients on the autism spectrum.

Professional Objectives:

  1. Identify the three deficit areas and types of behaviors required to meet the proposed diagnostic criteria for ASD in the Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM) V edition
  2. List 5-8 assessment tools designed to identify impairments in sensory processing, motor, play, communication or visual skills. 
  3. Define the terms “sensory reinforcement” and “sensory diet strategies” to demonstrate how they differ.
  4. List 3-5 characteristics of autism that impact the development of fine-motor skills.
  5. List five activities that may help the over-responsive child  achieve an optimal neurological state for learning
  6. List five activities that may help the under-responsive child achieve an optimal neurological state for learning.
  7. Identify types of visual impairments and treatment strategies
  8. Identify fine motor adaptations and teaching strategies
  9. List three aspects of iPad apps that make them valuable tools to promote engagement, learning and fine motor skills.  
  10. Identify strategies to promote social skills
  11. List 3 characteristics of the dog-child relationships that impact the child with ASD’s social, emotional and communication development.
  12. Identify at least 3 types of sensory stimulation provided during horse riding and how they impact sensory processing in the child with ASD.
