Course Overview

About two-thirds of vertebral compression fractures are never diagnosed as many patients and families believe that back pain is just an inevitable sign of aging and arthritis. Vertebral compression fractures can permanently alter the strength and shape of the spine, resulting in lost height because the spine is shorter or a stooped posture. Even more alarming, if left untreated, these fractures can cause depression from living in constant pain, increased lung and breathing problems and even early death.

This course outlines recent evidence supporting effective rehab for patients with vertebral compression fractures. After a brief introduction to spinal anatomy and mechanics, healthcare professionals will review the types and frequencies of vertebral compression fractures and subsequent spinal pathomechanics. Treatment approaches for acute injury will be addressed including pain management, mobility training, ADLs, and ambulation. Treatment for post-acute vertebral compression fractures, including posture training, spinal mobilization, strengthening exercises, and advanced mobility will be covered. Treatment protocols for OT and PT will be included as well as patient education materials and exercise handouts.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify normal spine anatomy and function and how these changes in advanced age.
  • Select the characteristics and consequences of vertebral compression fractures.
  • Identify management strategies for vertebral compression fractures.
  • Select pain management strategies for vertebral compression fractures
  • Recognize transfer training and strengthening exercises for patients with acute vertebral compression fractures
  • Identify the importance of decreasing kyphotic posture in patients with vertebral compression fractures
  • Select elements of treatment progression for strengthening and functional mobility in patients with vertebral compression fractures
  • Identify why falls prevention is important in patients with osteoporosis.
  • Select principles of ADL training in patients with vertebral compression fractures.
