Description:

This course is designed for occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants who work with persons with any kind of cognitive dysfunction including dementia, stroke, TBI, Parkinson’s Disease, mental illness, etc. This course will provide the participant with an in depth overview of the 6 Allen Cognitive Levels and the modes of performance that subdivide the levels. Occupational therapy practitioners will gain an understanding of how to administer and score the Allen Cognitive Level Screen in order to assess cognitive level of function. Finally participants will be able use task equivalence through task analysis in order to set realistic and relevant treatment goals, predict treatment functional outcomes and make recommendations for environmental modifications that maximize independence and protect patient safety.

Occupational therapy practitioners will develop an understanding of the Allen cognitive levels as well as an understanding of how to administer the Allen Cognitive Level Screen. OT Practitioners will be able to develop cognitively appropriate treatment goals and plans.

Professional Objectives:

  1. Identify causes of cognitive dysfunction and the unique contribution of occupational therapy in treating patients with cognitive impairments.
  2. Identify the information processing model.
  3. Recognize the importance of assessing cognitive function.
