How do I renew my physical therapy license in Michigan?
Michigan has set up an online system to help physical therapy professionals renew their licenses quickly and simply. The Michigan Professional Licensing User System (MiPLUS) contains a licensing and regulatory database application for all health and occupational professionals in Michigan.
To renew your physical therapy license, follow the guidelines below:
- Visit the MiPLUS website at www.michigan.gov/miplus.
- Log in or create an account.
- Click the Licenses tab.
- Select the link “Click here to Renew License.”
- Fill in all required information.
- Pay fee.
- Confirm your license status in the “My Records” tab.
In addition to CE and fees, the renewal application will include several questions related to professional conduct and disciplinary actions. The questions cover:
- Good moral character questions. These are designed to gauge the licensee’s ability and likelihood to serve the public in a fair, honest and open manner.
- Disciplinary question. Any licensee who has been previously sanctioned by another licensure, registration, certification, or other state board must report this to the Michigan Board of Physical Therapy.
- Human trafficking training. Licensees seeking renewal must certify on their renewal application that they have completed a one-time training in identifying victims of human trafficking.
What is the Implicit Bias Training requirement in Michigan?
New applicants for a Michigan physical therapy license must complete two hours of implicit bias training within the five years immediately preceding the issuance of their license or registration.
Any PT or PTA renewing their Michigan physical therapy license must subsequently complete one hour of implicit bias training each year of their license or registration cycle. Training can be used to satisfy CE requirements if it meets the Board's criteria for acceptable PDR activities. Colibri's course does not meet the criteria and therefore does not award CE credit and can only be used to satisfy the training requirement.
Why Implicit Bias Training?
Research shows that unconscious biases often affect clinicians’ perceptions of others, influencing decisions and actively contributing to health inequalities. Typically, implicit biases are negative and unintentionally lead to disparities in interactions, treatment decisions, and overall access to care.
The purpose of implementing implicit bias training is to make physical therapy professionals aware of this modifiable risk, which plays a role in health disparities. Elite's interactive online course meets Michigan’s standards for this requirement.
CE renewal requirements for Michigan PTs and PTAs
For both PTs and PTAs, the Michigan Board of Physical Therapy requires 24 hours of CE every two years. Two of those 24 hours are mandatory and must cover the following topics:
- 1 (PDR) Pain and Symptom Management
- 1 (PDR) Implicit Bias Training. Renewal applicants must complete one hour of implicit bias training for each year of their license or registration cycle.
- 1 (PDR) Identification of Human Trafficking (one-time requirement)
Licensees may only earn 12 credits through approved online CE programs or activities during any 24-hour period. Up to 20 hours of CE tagged Activity Code 1 may count toward your CE requirements. Licensees may not earn PDR credit for a continuing education program or activity that is equivalent or substantially equivalent to a program or activity for which they have already earned credit during that renewal period.
